THE GREAT MANDALA : One of the great protest songs of our youth. Peter, Paul and Mary. Most of our readers have no clue about the song ... or perhaps the group even. The Mandala is a sanskrit word for "circle" and really is a representation of our relationship to the infinite, our interconnectedness. You younger twits can reference the Lion King and "The Circle of Life" for the same inspiration.
ANYWAY, Jimmy Gray might say, "What goes around....." and then he'd drift off to sleep. TO the point: and after 25 years, I'm sure the statute of limitations has run out on all our hi-jinx (except for the murders). It really should come as no surprise to anyone that guys in a band might have had at least a winking relationship with a few controlled substances in the 1970's and 1980's. A popular one for those trips to Austin and Lubbock and back was a little meth-amphetemine to make it through. Actually, it was a popular one for just day to day living. Brighty-eyed and bushy-tailed and, and, and as everyone said, "that sh*t'll kill ya. You gotta get off. " O. K. Was I talkin' about the Great Mandela? Oh yea, The Circle. This week my crack-pot Doctor decides that having a bizzar and eclectic sense of humor combined with difficulty concentrating and boredom and superior intelligence is a sure sign of............................A.D.D. That's it, adult attention deficit disorder. Everyone should have a California Doctor. A Stanford Doctor! The new Rx? The cure? A jug full of Adderall! Look it up. Amphetamine powder. "Take a trip on the Great Mandala" God is great. Now, on the next trip to Dallas, how do I keep the rest of the band from riffling through my luggage? |

I was thinking obout our good friend Big Joel, who was bouncer supremo at Bowley and Wilson for many years (and also a roadie when we traveled. Joel is deathly ill at the moment, I'm sorry to report. Joel would guard the front door of the club, watching my wife Adele and the cover charge money too. His duties also included fetching Adele cocktails from the bar. Donny would see Joel coming and know it was time to pour another Drambouie on the rocks. Adele, being the bosses wife, could have all she wanted....until she ordered a "damn brewery"...at which point Joel was to cut her off. I, however, could keep drinking Tangueray long after i was ordering "tango wees" straight up. the privilege of ownership. Kept Joel hopping. All our love and prayers to Big Joel.
